Samsung beats Apple in US mobile market for first time ever

New data has revealed that Samsung has beaten Apple as the leading handset manufacturer in the US for the month of October 2012. According to comScore, which released the report, both Google’s Android and Samsung are leading the US mobile market currently.

The report says that Samsung is the top handset manufacturer overall with 26.3 percent market share (up 0.7 percentage points from July 2012) while Apple has 17.8 percent market share (up 1.5 percentage points from July 2012). Google’s Android is the leading OS among smartphone platforms, accounting for 53.6 percent of smartphone subscribers, while Apple’s iOS has 34.3 percent.

This is the first time that Samsung has beaten Apple as the leading OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) in the US. The report states, Apple ranked second for the first time on record with, followed by LG with 17.6 percent share, Motorola with 11 percent and HTC with 6 percent.

The number of smartphone users in the US is currently 121.3 million people according to the report which is roughly 51.9 percent of the mobile market and this represents a 6 percent increase since July.

Samsung’s Galaxy S III was recently declared as the world’s best selling smartphone.

According to research firm, Strategy Analytics Samsung sold an estimated 18 million S III devices in the third quarter of 2012,  when compared to iPhone 4S sales of 16.2 million.  The iPhone 5 was only launched in September unlike the Galaxy S III which was launched in May 2012.
